What LTGDC does

The aim of LTGDC is to promote and deliver sustainable regeneration and growth of the London Thames Gateway within the context of the national policies set out in the Department for Communities and Local Government’s Sustainable Communities Plan, the strategies for the wider Thames Gateway sub-region and the Spatial Development Strategy for Greater London (“London Plan”).

LTGDC has a statutory remit to regenerate its area by:

  • Bringing land and buildings back into effective use
  • Creating an attractive environment
  • Encouraging economic growth and
  • Ensuring that housing and facilities are available to encourage people to live and work in the area.

There are three ways in which LTGDC works to achieve this:

  • It influences and coordinates with other organisations and groups to make improvements in its area
  • It has prioritised eight project areas where it will deliver its own projects
  • It has the power to grant permission for strategic planning applications and the power to compulsory purchase land needed for redevelopment.
