Planning Info
The Lower Lea Valley and London Riverside are the two areas with
greatest potential in the London Thames Gateway region.
However, there are historic obstacles to regeneration - wide
swathes of contaminated and derelict land from outdated heavy
industries, poor housing and an unskilled workforce living in poor
housing that constituted some of the most deprived areas in the
country.
LTGDC’s task is to bring prosperity to the London Thames Gateway
and simultaneously raise the quality of life. Over the next three
years we expect to invest £248m and attract £1.8bn from the private
sector, create 8,000 homes and 7,600 jobs.
But our remit continues well beyond the 2012 Games and by 2016
we hope to see 40,000 new homes and 28,000 jobs created in the area
as a result of our work.
The Lower Lea Valley stretches south from the Olympic site to
the Thames and is scheduled for major regeneration packages at
Stratford and Canning Town – Custom House. Around them the river
will be the focal point of a new park and leisure area.
London Riverside stretches along 30km of neglected Thames
frontage from Beckton in the west, through Barking and Dagenham to
Rainham.
Work is already in hand to encourage new creative and green
technology industries and London’s biggest new park for more than
100 years.
