69 200 people live in London Thames Gateway Development Corporation’s area and 70% are of working age.

The LTGDC area contains over 5 000 hectares of land extending across East London Boroughs – Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Newham, Havering, Barking & Dagenham and Waltham Forest.

There are 28 558 households in London Thames Gateway with an average density of 6 households per hectare – compared to an average 19 across the capital.

20% of land in London Thames Gateway is non natural land use such as rail embankments and 45% is open space – just 2% is used for domestic buildings.

In the period 1991-2000, 500 hectares of land in the London Thames Gateway area changed use, representing an annual change of 1% of the total area. During the same period, the London region had a 0.5% annual change in land use.

The largest net increase of land use over the 1991-2000 period was for highways and road use, with the largest decrease for industry.

75% of the population are white (including culturally diverse minorities), with the remainder from black and Asian groups.

In one year alone, (2000-01) there was a 3.4% net growth in population (2356 people), and a net increase in households of 1.3% (323 households). 46% of migrants were from ethnic minority backgrounds.

There are some 4 500 manufacturing firms in the Thames Gateway region with 10% of all UK manufacturing undertaken in London.

The region has access to a labour pool of 3.6 million, with 283,000 people educated to NVQ Level 4 or above.

The Thames Gateway`s own airport, London City presently handles 1.4 million passengers per year, serves 23 European destinations by 14 airlines.

Despite 75% of 16-74 year olds in the area having no formal qualifications, 50% are in employment - the Thames Gateway area has the lowest employment costs in the capital.

The London Thames Gateway Development Corporation's territory extends across two large and distinct geographical areas - the Lower Lea Valley and London Riverside.

An estimated 200 000 new jobs will be created in the Thames Gateway by 2016.
