About the area
In the west of the Lower Lea Valley, Bromley
by Bow and Leaside are areas of declining industries benefiting
from waterside and a heritage setting and hosting London’s largest
film studios. Although well connected by tube and bus, it remains
an area of high deprivation and poor physical
environment. Further south down the River Lea, derelict sites
and utilities lands dominate and obstruct a stunning waterside
setting.
LTGDC’s strategy is to secure the
comprehensive regeneration of the area, promoting and guiding,
possibly using compulsory purchase powers where necessary.
Investment in new homes, workspace, social infrastructure,
neighbourhood facilities and better access across the river will
ensure local people benefit from anticipated growth over the
next 30-40 years.
LTGDC projects
The London Borough of Tower Hamlets are in the process
of land use briefs for the Imperial Street/Hancock Road
areas and the Sugarhouse Lane/Hunts Lane areas. This
activity follows the successful defence by LTGDC of its
decision to refuse an application at Imperial Street that would
have prevented comprehensive regeneration of the area. An
implementation strategy to take forward development at key sites in
Poplar Riverside, including Ailsa Street, is also being
prepared.
