London Riverside

Where

From Beckton in the west, through Barking and South Dagenham to Rainham in the east.

Key figures

LTGDC's regeneration frameworks will contribute to:

  • 33,500 new homes
  • 17,000 new jobs

About the area

London Riverside will be a modern linear city designed to reinvigorate 30km of neglected Thames frontage. The emphasis will be on bringing a new quality of life appropriate to the 21st Century. Well located schools and health centres will serve new and existing residents.

At Barking Riverside a new community of 20,000 people will be created on 210 hectares of disused land.

London Riverside Parklands will create a network of green spaces linking to the green belt outside the city, ultimately the biggest new leisure area in the capital for more than a century. It is expected to attract up to one million visitors per year.

LTGDC projects

LTGTDC is closely involved with the borough councils and the London Development Authority in planning regeneration of the entire area. We are using our powers to purchase land to ensure viable areas of comprehensive redevelopment for businesses, homes, schools and health centres.

These include the town centre improvements at Barking and Rainham, the creative and cultural industries hub at Abbey Road, Barking and the sustainable industries park at Dagenham. We are contributing to the creation of the London Riverside Parklands.

Other projects

The Docklands Light Railway is to be extended to Barking Riverside and Dagenham Docks; Crossrail will be a high speed connection through the City to Paddington and Heathrow. Both are due for completion by 2017.

The proposed Thames Gateway Bridge would span the river between Beckton and Thamesmead, cutting local journey times by 30 minutes, with potential for dedicated public transport lanes and a rail crossing.
